Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a man, Akintoye Waris, for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a goat valued at ₦200,000 in the Odeda area of the state. According to reports, the goat was used for his daughter’s naming ceremony.
The incident unfolded on December 25, 2024, when Waris and his accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf, were accused of invading a farm while the owner, Mark, was out grazing cattle. Upon his return, Mark noticed one of his goats was missing and quickly raised an alarm. Members of the community reported seeing the suspects transporting the goat on a motorcycle.
Police Investigation
According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the suspects were arrested by officers from the Odeda division on Thursday. During interrogation, Waris and Yusuf confessed to stealing the goat, which they slaughtered on December 27. They admitted the meat was used to prepare food for Waris’s daughter’s naming ceremony, which was held in the Olodo community.
Community Reactions
The case has sparked mixed reactions within the community, with many condemning the theft but sympathizing with Waris’s financial struggles. Others, however, called for stricter penalties to discourage such acts.
