Highlife, Ghana’s most valued musical identity, approaches 100 this year, and what better way to commemorate this living heritage than with a performance that captures its essence? On Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, the Efua T. Sutherland Drama Studio at the University of Ghana, Legon, will come alive with rhythm, poetry, and nostalgia as Kwame Brenya and Akɔm Band conduct the third edition of their annual musical and poetry celebration—AKƆMCERT 3.0, entitled “HIGHLIFE IS ALIVE.”

This year’s event represents a cultural milestone. One hundred years of Highlife music represents not just a century of tunes, but also a century of Ghanaian identity articulated through sound. Highlife has transported Ghana’s pleasures, challenges, and ambitions throughout decades, from the palmwine strums of Jacob Sam and E.T. Mensah’s dance band days to the deep harmonies of Amakye Dede and Daddy Lumba. Music has formed our parties, politics, love tales, and memories—and AKƆMCERT 3.0 intends to reignite that spark.

The event will feature live music and spoken word in a distinctively Ghanaian style. Kwame Brenya, famed for his culturally based poetry and stagecraft, will lead the charge with the dynamic Akɔm Band. The band has won accolades for their genuine instrumentation and mix of traditional and contemporary sounds. Together, they offer a sonic voyage through Ghana’s musical history, present, and future.

They’ll be joined on stage by some of today’s most exciting musicians. Fameye, whose poignant lyrics and Highlife-inspired tunes have garnered him national acclaim, will perform the evening. The ever-energetic Nkyinkyim Band, the soulful Rama Blak, and the lyrical Megborna will also be playing, each offering their own unique version of Highlife’s developing voice.

AK̆MCERT 3.0 is more than just a concert; it’s a reminder that Highlife is a live beat that still inspires today. The event welcomes music lovers, students, and cultural aficionados to dress proudly and prepare to dance, reflect, and reconnect with Ghana’s musical traditions.
