Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has responded to a viral incident in his hometown of Mbaise, Imo State, where a wedding was recently called off after the groom’s family was requested to pay a bride price of N1 million.
A video circulating online captured the frustration of a groom’s family member, who expressed outrage at the high demand and announced that the marriage would not proceed.
The situation sparked widespread debate about traditional marriage costs in southeastern Nigeria.
Kanayo responded to the controversy by defending Mbaise, claiming that bride prices vary across Igbo country based on family customs and the bride’s value.
He dismissed the myth that Mbaise demands large bride costs, writing:
“Bride price is relative in Igbo land and varies from family to family. It is also dependent on the value attributed to the girl… It is not peculiar to Ndi Mbaise.”
