A Senate session was disrupted due to a dispute over seating arrangements involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. The session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, became contentious when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s seat was relocated without her prior consent. Upon discovering the change, she refused to comply, leading to a heated exchange.
Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Ali Monguno highlighted the issue by raising a point of order, drawing attention to what he described as Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s “improper seating position.” This intervention escalated tensions, resulting in a shouting match. The Sergeant-at-Arms intervened, attempting to escort Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan out of the chamber. Amid the commotion, Senate President Akpabio’s efforts to restore order were initially unsuccessful, as Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan demanded an explanation for the unauthorized change to her seating arrangement. The situation was eventually brought under control after the public address systems were temporarily shut down, allowing normal proceedings to resume.
This incident underscores ongoing tensions within the Senate regarding seating protocols, especially following recent renovations to the chamber. Similar disputes have arisen, with some senators expressing dissatisfaction over their newly assigned seats, leading to heated debates and disruptions during sessions.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has been an active figure in the Senate. Prior to her tenure, she gained national attention for her investigative report on the Ajaokuta Steel Mill, highlighting corruption and mismanagement issues. Her commitment to transparency and accountability continues to influence her legislative activities.
The Senate leadership has yet to issue an official statement regarding the seating arrangement dispute. However, this event highlights the importance of clear communication and established protocols to maintain decorum and order during legislative proceedings.
